Birthday Party, Golf, The Tucson Bead Show, and a Hot Dog Roast!

Celebrating Bob's birthday at Dillon's BBQ - with a huge brownie sundae for dessert! Friends Bob and Walda, and Jerry and Ernarae helped make it a party.

Three perfect drives!! Golf with Romsteads and Bissets at Palm Valley . . . .

Ernarae and I went to the huge impressive Tuscon Bead and Gem Show - what an adventure! It takes place in sites all over the city, with an unbelievable variety of beads and gems from all over the world. The red and black pile in the center of the floor in the picture is a mountain of beads in a booth in the African Village area! We had a fabulous day exploring, and shopping . . . . .

Our portable campfire was perfect for a hot dog roast, complete with s'mores for dessert!

Arizona

We're all settled in our spot in Pueblo El Mirage near Phoenix, and the weather is finally up to par! Lots of sunshine and it's getting warm. Last night we got out our little campfire and had a lovely evening on the patio with Jerry and Ernarae, and today is golf day at Palm Canyon. Hope my real swing shows up, not this imposter swing that's been hanging around since we got down here . . .

Last weekend we drove an hour and a half southwest of Phoenix down to the little town of Ajo, in the middle of the desert, where there was an Oldtime Fiddlers Contest. It was great! Very small in scale compared to the National Contest in Weiser, Idaho, but lots of fun. There was some impressive young talent there - brought the crowd of 200 or so to their feet. I loved every minute of it. At the lunch break we drove 15 or so more miles south into the Pipe Organ National Monument - a desert preserve featuring a large number and variety of cactus and the very rugged Stark Mountain. We were a little too early for the cactus to be blooming, but the landscape was beautiful.

Ernarae and I went hiking in the White Tank mountains on Wednesday, choosing the 8 mile Mesquite Canyon loop that climbs up the canyon to a high ridge, then comes down Willow Canyon to a final junction. No flowers yet, but it's a gorgeous hike with a panoramic view of the Phoenix valley below.

We've enjoyed several dinners and get togethers with Bob and Walda and Jerry and Ernarae, and met up with friends from previous years in the park, Del and Lela.
More to come soon . . . .

Our first stop on our 2008 winter saga was Borrego Springs, California, about an hour and a half south of Palm Desert - a beautiful and cosmic place! Sixty miles from the nearest stop light, Borrego Springs is peaceful and quiet in a spectacular desert setting at the base of the mountains. Jerry and Ernarae Bisset told us about this Shangri La, for which all four of us are eternally grateful. The only problem is that there's so much to do it's easy to get way too busy . . . There are two golf courses right in the Park, great hiking within a couple of miles, traffic-free country roads for biking, and the town of Borrego Springs featuring art galleries, boutiques and restaurants. Everyone at the Park is very friendly, and we met some great new people. Our social life got very active, as we golfed, hiked, drank and ate much and often with our new friends! We moved on to Phoenix, but will return to this fabulous spot.
